The Week That Was

Between London and the return to the Purple Palace Greg Joseph was named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Here are the thoughts about the win over Chicago

NDSU started the week with another individual accolade as Syra Tanchin Offensive Performer of the Week. Two days later Moorhead's Ian Simonich was named League Golfer of the Month.

Prior to that the women's team finished in the top third of the 21-team field in Tacoma.

On the verge of the weekend ⚽️ took down Kansas City 3 - 1 but finished with a 2 - 0 loss to Oral Roberts Sunday to remain in the lower portion of the middle of the League standing.

The day before it was a duel of the top 2 🏐 as North Dakota came down and got the win, opening the door for South Dakota to slide into the top spot while the Birdies remain just behind the Bison.

Saturday also included the trip to Terre Haute. For his work Will Mostaert was named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Prior to most of the games beginning 🤼 announced it's roster.

🏐 started the week in Aberdeen but did not have a good showing. Things didn't improve back home as Augustana & Wayne State rolled in. It was only slightly better when 🏊 hit the pool at Northern State.

🏃 started to turn the tide as the men took third in Jamestown. ⚽️ kept it going with a 3 - 1 win over Southwest MN and then drew even against Sioux Falls as the keepers held the nets Sunday.

🏈 got off the shnide against Minot St. as Jack Strand went off again.

⛳️ finished the week in Iowa with an 11th place performance.

Concordia started the week with the conclusion of the season for men's & women's ⛳️ at the Conference meet. Fast forward to Friday, 🏐 dropped one to St. Scholstica 3 - 1 but came back to beat Macalester by that score Sunday.

Completing the local sweep, Concordia took down Macalester by 29 as RB Peyton Mortenson hit quadruple-digits!

Sunday also included a pair of ⚽️ matches, with both the men & women finishing behind Viterbo.

🏃checked in from Jamestown with both the men & women having the fifth-best performance.

The 2022 preseason started with the Howl handling both of their preseason games prior to Sunday. With Karl-Anthony Towns still recovering from an illness & Gobert getting eased in after France went deep in the Eurobasket tournament, none of the starting five have gone together yet. Even so, the squad still had little trouble handling Miami & the Lakeless.

Saturday night's home opener was a sell-out but the team couldn't quite get it's one contest to go their way, losing to Sioux Falls. They'll have their first multi-game weekend on the road upcoming.

Reminder that scores and recruiting news are updated regularly so check back often!

Now for this week's highlights

Moorhead started the week with a shutout of Fergus Falls 🏐. They were joined by D/G/F who took care of Thief River Monday in the minimum. A night later they dueled to a 3 - 2 finish, with Moorhead coming out on top. LP/A got one as well, over Fertile/Beltrami who was coming off a 3 - 2 loss against Ada/Borup. Park Christian added another shutout win to their resume as well.

To the West, Davies, West Fargo, Sheyenne & North all won going away Tuesday while South was pushed to the limit by Red River. Out of town #5 Thompson edged #1 Northern Cass for their first loss of the season but they bounced back with a shutout of Maple River. Central Cass also had a clear win over Oak Grove, as did Enderlin against Lisbon. Richland got one on their schedule over Tri-State. May/Port/C/G added a shutout to their season as well, versus Drayton/Valley/Edinburg. Kindred & Hankinson also added to their win columns against Wyndmere/Lidgerwood & Sargent County but it took them each all five.

On the 🏈 field Shanley & Davies engaged in one of the best games of the year while Sheyenne added another lopsided win to their crosstown rivalry. North also recovered from a recent swoon with a 22-point win over Devils Lake. Oak Grove added it's second win in the last three week, shutting out Northern Cass while Central & Kindred both cruised to victory again. May/Port/C/G ended the regular season with another convincing win, securing the fifth seed & a first round bye in the 9-man playoff. They will face the winner of Wyndmere/Lidgerwood & Hatton/Northwood and likely Cavalier in the quarterfinals. Maple River & Richland will square-off Friday at Hope/Page HS with the winner to travel to LaMoure.

in Minnesota Park Christian got it's second win in as many weeks, beating Laporte by 20. Barnesville got it's toughest test to date but got by Detroit Lakes 28 - 7. The same goes for D/G/F as they kept the loss-column empty, edging Hawley by a touchdown. Fertile/Beltrami also maintained it's undefeated season with a 28-point win over Ulen/Hitterdal.

This week also included tournament season going into high gear. Moorhead 🎾 went first with Sophie Swenson & Kylie Torkelson finishing first in the sub-section doubles tournament while Katryna Hansen finished second on the individual side. In Minot Sheyenne & South further validated their quality seasons with wins in the opening round but could not make it through to the championship, with Sheyenne finishing their third place match ahead 4 - 1. WFS's Ethan Raan was named Senior Athlete of the Year after winning the state singles tournament.

The state boys ⚽️ tournament was more complicated. Tuesday it was announced that due to an eligibility error by the administration Sheyenne was forced to forfeit all their games & thus was not allowed to compete in the tournament. Their last three years of tournament experiences have just about equalled all the bad breaks that every other team in the state has every had to deal with but it seems as though the West Fargo school system isn't going to make any changes despite bearing the responsibility. It's screwed up, but politics & education often are.

In their stead Shanley got new life but were shown the door by Legacy & Century. That was not the case for Davies & West Fargo. In their opening match the Eagles got two goals apiece from Savey Jones & Dylan Pritchard to lead them to a 6 - 0 win over Century. The Bulls had to sweat-out a 1 - 0 lead by Kenan Burekovic but survived the Capital's original high. Davies was back at it against Legacy but Patrick Lawrence got two to the net to join Jones and advance them back to the championship. West Fargo also made the final with a 1 - 0 win over Minot as Bernard Musafiri got a penalty kick to go late in the second half to put them into the championship for the first time since 2018. The two EDC powers played to a first half draw with a goal each that wasn't broken until double OT as Ibrahim Bangura got a header to go! In the wake of the tournament Davies Ian Costello was named Coach of the Year while Esteban Nunez was the Senior Athlete of the Year.

There wasn't as much on the line but Moorhead's girls also had a highlight experience, hanging 12 scores on Pelican Rapids on senior night!

The week also included the resignation of Tony Walz as the Shanley boys 🎾 coach after 13 years.

That's the week in a nut-shell!
