A full weekend began with a 🏀 doubleheader at home against Omaha. It took a strong fourth quarter on both ends but the women started with a balanced win, 62-53. Reneya Hopkins (14) & Heaven Hamling (13) paced the way.

The men followed with a contest that went down to the last shot. 19 each by Rocky Kreuser & Sam Griesel helped them weather a 31 point storm by Omaha's Wanjang Tut. Kreuser also wrangled a dozen rebounds while Tyree Eady came within two boards of a double/double as well.

Rematch #1 had a similar feel but only Hamling got into double figures with a career high 21 as the women won 66-55. In the finale the veteran leaders did much of the heavy lifting again but were accompanied by Maleeck Harden-Hayes (14) & Grant Nelson with 11 & 8 off the bench. Game by game the young duo continue to make strides. Nelson, in-particular, is already showing that he's going to be even more of a PROBLEM for the league than those of us who saw him in high school would have guessed, especially this soon!

The competition concluded today as the 🤼 team hit the mat against Northern Iowa & South Dakota St.. In standard fashion they took care of the bunnies 21-13 but were outdone by UNI 27-11. If you're like me and need more info to understand what those scores represent, got your hook up!

Before the second weekend of hoops could begin, 🤼 hosted SW MN St on Thursday. Moorhead started out strong but couldn't hold their lead through the final four bouts.

🏀 got back on the court against Crookston. This time it was the women at home while the men were up north. Jacob Beeninga's 22 off the bench lead all scorers and was one of only two to crack 20 points, the other being Dane Zimmer. They powered Moorhead to the 91-68 win. Back at Nemzek Mariah McKeever finished with the high of 18 while Peyton Boom added 15 & 9 as they took down the Eagles 77-67.

In the rematch Peyton Boom had a career-high 27 with 9 more boards. Sarah Jacobson came in second with 15. Back up north Gatdoar Kueth finished with 20 points while Lorenzo McGhee added 11 & 10 to make it an 8-game sweep, 78-62.

It's early in the season but both teams looked ready to contend in the North.

The week concluded at the pool.

Southwest was in town to try their luck in the water. Unlike on Thursday, Moorhead finished with a convincing 143-78 win.

After a couple of weeks of losses, including an OT defeat at the hands of San Antonio on Saturday with Karl-Anthony Towns back from his wrist injury, the Howl snapped the streak on Sunday. Without their cornerstone but with their top defensive player, as Josh Okogie got back on the court, they limited possessions and held SA under 90 points. That sort of defensive effectiveness will be infrequent. But the backcourt scoring by Beasley & Russell was at a level that many had been asking for in the absence of Towns and could come more often with or without KAT. So in a way, it was a double-w!

Fargo got the weekend started early with a visit by Waterloo. It took more than 15 minutes before either team snuck the puck by the goalie but Fargo managed two before the first period ended. The first came off the stick of Tristan Broz and Jeremy Davidson got the other two minutes after. The lead was cut in half during the second but Fargo got it back and then some in the third. Erik Bargholtz made it a two-goal game again and then Cody Monds put them up three with his first score of the year. Waterloo got a second shot by Andrew Miller but couldn't get any closer.

On Saturday, in Omaha, Monds and Aaron Huglen each scored their second goals of the season in the first period. Omaha managed an answer in the second but couldn't keep Matthew Crasa's shot from making it a more comfortable advantage. Brennan Boynton did the rest.

In the weekend finale Fargo struck first but Sioux City answered with six scores, three a piece against each goaltender that was sent out. SC has dominated both of their chances against Fargo despite being near the bottom of the standings. Fargo will be at home for the next five, including a pair against second place Des Moines next week.

Another week of high school action. The early part of the week included a crosstown trip by Sheyenne to North. Then, on Saturday afternoon, the Shanley boys were at the same dome in a game that went down to the wire. Along with those came more college commitments by athletes in the area or to the local three.
